Upper Pet IMO is one of the best runs in Ontario. Directions are as follows:
Enter Algonquin park from the East entrance ( I can never remember the name).
Drive as far into the park as you can to the Lake Travers parking lot. (about 70km). This is the take-out.
For the put-in it involves some paddling and a hike unless you find the magical gap in the old railroad bed that you can drive up (which I have yet to find).
Portage up the river right shore. Put in at the top of Poplar rapids and paddle upstream to the next portage, portage again. Put in at the top and paddle up to the next portage. Hike up to the rail bed (visible) and then hike up the rail bed about 4-5 km (bring straps for towing). When you cross a bridge this is the bottom of the first rapid (MacDonald Rapids). Keep going to the top of the rapids, put in and have a good trip paddling back down to lake Travers
