Me and my buddy are going to be paddling the Ottawa this w-e. We both can roll, and T-rescue each other, but are beginners (i.e. very tippy). We have taken a week long course on the middle channel. This w-e depending on the water level we will prob run the main. We would definitely walk McCoy’s and Colliseum.
I was wondering if anyone had suggestions/comments. If we are in over our heads, plz let me know. Thanks.August 10, 2006 at 10:42 pm #19594blissterParticipant
I don’t think that you are over your heads in terms of running the main this weekend.
This is my first year whitewater kayaking and I”ve pretty much went through the same process as you. I’ve ran the main channel about 15 times this summer and never had any problems running the river even when my roll was not so good!
In my opinion, if the water level is at +2 or lower the main channel is where you’ll want to be.
The spots you’ll probably want to go is McCoy’s for babyface which is the last wave of the mccoy’s set. and the last set of the lorne as well.
You’ll see where the good spots are because they are the busiest.
I’m looking to join out with someone on saturday morning or afternoon so if you want to boat together I’m more than willing to take you down the river and show you the beginner spots.

Its awsome that your going to do the main since you are just starting, but McCoys is a fun run, if your nervous about running it you can walk as you said or you can run satlers(River left) and than run the poop shoot. This is also my first year I have been paddling for like a month and I love satlers.
Hope ya have fun and good luck, let me know how your run goes.

That’s great that you guys are looking at going down the main. you are not in over your heads but you do need to stay focused and weary of the dangers as you paddle. Look out for one another and do not run anything you think might make you swim.
I took to beg. down the ottawa 2 weekends ago, and although they both swam many times, they were ok. Walking Mccoy’s is a definate, watch out at Garb too, make sure you know the line. Pushbutton, no problem, Butchers knife, you should be ok, there is a sneak on the fat left or you can just punch it and keep up the bracing. The normans is always fun, make sure you have lots of speed, if you go fast enough you can just fly over it and hopefully not roll. Right after the normans (in case you don’t know) is Coliseum, you can walk it to the left (there is a path up top) or if the water is small there is a sneak shoot either far left or far right. Make sure you hit it tho. If you are off the line you could get trashed in one of the many holes at Coli.
Anyways, good luck to you both! If you read this msg before you go I will also be up on the Ottawa this weekend. I have a blue Showdown or a Red Astro (depending on my mood) and my bf has a blue 4Fun if you see us say hello!

sorry for the lateness of the postAugust 14, 2006 at 2:57 am #19598
And just in case I dont see you guys for a while.
Regardless the few swims you guys had, you both did awesome. I did not realize that you guys were THAT new when we took you through McCoys and was impressed that you guys both had the go-nads to dispose of all rational thought and take every single rapid head on. Needless to say I WAS a tad worried when John disapeared in Colliseum with his 8-10 seconds of down time but was relieved to see his head pop up with a huge smile on his face. I hope you guys had a blast and I’m glad I was able to be part of your learning experience. See you on the water.

I would just like to say thank you for all the excellent advice. We ran the main channel both sat and sun and was awesome.August 14, 2006 at 10:30 pm #19600POBOParticipant
as it is usually clogged with play paddlers, quite a few of which seem to think that they own certain features of river as in waves, eddies and holes.
I had a really bad experience there a few years back that has left a bad taste in my mouth regarding that section of river. Be careful.

I love the Ottawa. I have had worse problems with Rafts on the Ottawa than paddlers. Usually if you talk to people things can work out. I wouldn’t boy cott the Ottawa all together because of that. It’s a great river with fantastic play spots. Try it again you might like it!!!August 17, 2006 at 1:23 pm #19603
