What are the issues concerning bringing a river knife across? I know they ask for weapons to be declared, but will they let it through? Are the rules the same for a Canadian entering the US as an American entering Canada?

Never declared it, as I consider my river knife (which is leashed to my PFD, so it won’t get lost) a tool and not a weapon.
Traveled with it across the border (both ways) at least a dozen times, never had any issues.

I’ve crossed and declared it both ways, never an issue. Make sure they know it’s in your boating gear and only used while paddling/camping (you’re not carrying around the knife at all times).

My gerber river shorty is never a problem. You should be fine as long as it’s not a machete or saber or something outrageous.

I actually think Ontario allows a longer blade than Michigan

Yeah, yeah, I got it. Kick a man while he’s down.

Why "bring a knife to a gun fight".
Recurve bows worked well in Deliverance.
Joking aside, as TGG stated, bringing river knives across the border isn’t an issue. Make sure your gear looks used, or some customs officer may want to charge duties.

Well at least smells used, I think they’re allergic to neoprene

Wasn’t intentional, had’t even read your post about the lost knife, trust me had I meant to make a comment, it wouldn’t be that subtle…

What I meant to imply was that (apart from preventing one from loosing the river knife, of course), having the knife lashed to the PFD would also help arguing that it’s a tool and not a weapon.
