Now theres a real freakin big suprise!!! Gee I wonder if it has anything at all to do with the fact that ALL of the judges are affilaited with Jackson kayaks in some way or another… This whole worlds thing is a joke and an embaressment to any sport that is trying to be taken professionally.

There needs to be some SERIOUS changes to the competitive side to this sport.

    Hey Ron,

Did you compete RON? I thought so… Just because the man has a rigorous trainning schedule, is a really nice guy, a former Olympian and is 42 years old, has enough business sense to start his own kayak company, and make it prosper by offering top notch boats for expert creekers, playboaters, river runners and children!!!, and make enough high scoring moves to stay on the wave, leaving his most explosive moves to the end… Sounds plain smart to me. Yeah, sure, it was fixed…

I saw him at Push-Button last year, instructing paddlers, while throwing cartwheels and loops, all the while talking!!! . Sure no talent at all (sic) A guy asked him to do a McNasty and he said Okay and threw 2 down, just like that! He also spent an hour looking for the paddle, that one of his students lost at McKoys. I wish I had 10% of his skills… I guess determination, decency and success are qualities that you don’t appreciate Ron (how Canadian).

If EJ is anything to judge by, then Peter Czonza, Billy Harris and Nick Toutman have plenty of years ahead of them to win the gold. Hell I emailed EJ to help with donations for the IWSO (Imigrant Women Services of Ottawa) last year. Know what he did? He replied to me personaly and donated equipment to be sold on auction, for a cause he didn’t even know about, in a country of which he’s not even a citizen! Corran Adisson did the same by the way (and no one seems to like him either. yet he makes top notch boats too!). Two first class paddlers and individuals if you ask me!

Oh, and I don’t own a Jackson Kayak or a Dragorossi, who do you paddle for?

    My 2 cents..

there is no denying that EJ is an exceptional kayaker and one of the classiest people on the river. However, i too find it strange that he wins so often.

from my perspective, any sport that is judged will always face this type of criticism. if your not competing head to head or against the clock, how can you really decide who won? maybe EJ wins because he is expected to win, and that makes the judges prejudiced.

i wasn’t at the comp so i can’t really make an informed opinion as to whether EJ really deserved the win…. all i’m saying is that freestyle kayaking along with synchro swimming, pairs ice dancing and every other "sport" that requires judges to hand out the gold will always lack credibility in my eyes.

    I was there.
    Peter Czonka really kicked butt.

However EJ’s ride was calculated, precise, relaxed and damn he smiled through it!
No one else makes it look that easy.

His rides were designed to score points and the big show moves were saved for the last couple seconds.

He won cause he is not just good, but the best.

    That may not least forever.
As young Nick trains with him and is coached by him, and competitors like Peter C learn from competing against him, he will eventually have those who learn from him, surpass him.
That isthe sign of a great mentor, but until then, in my opinion, he won it without prejudice.

    See you on the water.

I’m embarassed for all you people burning EJ. He has done more for the sport than your whining on a message board will every do.

I watched the worlds as well and no doubt EJ had a great ride. I admit, it could have been won by Peter Csonka. Both of them had great rides and it really could have gone either way…but to imply that there was some sort of conspiracy would not be accurate.

All that said…I do agree that the judging needs to be more diverse. Even if it’s being judged accurately, it’s still perceived by many to be biased…that alone hurts the sport. Changes are required….

    My 2 cents…
