A question – I am a trained level 1 instructor certified with the Alberta Whitewater Association (which also certifies me as an NCCP level one coach). What is the equivalent system here in Ontario, and am I covered, or do I need to be purchasing a membership with Ontario Whitewater?

I’m an open boater – so I don’t know the kayaking system too well (which is I assume what you’re interested in).

But…I know at MKC (and I think also Paddler’s Co-op) which are two of the main paddling schools in the Ottawa valley, they don’t require an official certification for their kayak instructors (although they do for their canoe instructors). Some folks are working on coming up with a new certification system, which may be required to instruct in the future, but it isn’t yet. For the time being, if you’re a kayaker who hasn’t instructed at the school before (in this case I’m just talking MKC – I don’t know about the Co-op or other schools), you just work as an assistant for one course and after that they either give you the okay to instruct on your own or not.

If you’re interested more from an insurance point of view, I really don’t know how that works. Like I said, I’m an open boater, so I pay an annual membership to ORCA (ontario recreational canoeing association) and that covers me while I’m teaching. For kayakers I’m not sure (but anywhere you are looking to work should be able to tell you).

Hope that helps to some extent – but another kayaker would probably be able to tell you more…

    Cheers,
    Tim

Your insurance company, or the company that you plan on instructing for, can answer that question. There is no legislation regarding whitewater instructor certs, so it boils down to what you need to do to be insured.

are also transferable to Whitewater Ontario. Same with BC’s program and la Fédé in Quebec. The programs all certify at the national level with the National Coaching Program. There will be a transfer to a Coaching Canada Competency Based Education and Training system in the very near future, which will comprise all instructional levels including a Leadership program. The 4 mentionned provinces are in the process of building one training program consistant across the country. We hope to have it in place next year. At the moment we are still training Level I and II instructors (as usual)

Email me for the specs for registering here in Ontario, in order as well to fall under the WO insurance program – and Welcome!

Thanks all! As a postscript, if there is anyone living in the Hamilton area interested in helping a couple of us launch a whitewater club at McMaster university, send me a jingle/email. We’ve arranged for free pool time on campus for the fall, and will be working to beg/borrow/steal boats and equipment over the next few months. I’ll be posted more about this later in the summer.
