I am just so excited to share with everyone the events of the past week.
First, I am the proud new owner of a house 5 minutes from the Ottawa River Put-in.
Second, I stopped in at the Mountain Surf shop in Friendsville, MD last week, and wanted to pass on my awesome experience with John Mason. Many of you probably already know that I have been using my old Riot Booster skirt on my new 2Fun and have been requiring a “kayaking-babysitter” to help get my skirt on during the winter when I’m unable to soak it. John found me a skirt that fit the 2Fun, and resized the tunnel while I was kayakling in WV. I stopped by 4 days later and picked it up, brand new and Jenny-sized. Thanks a lot John! What great service!
Third, I just got back from a week of kayaking in DC/MD/WV, and ran my first ever waterfall. I wasn’t allowed to scout it beforehand, so I just ran it blind. Wonder Falls on Big Sandy Creek is a clean approx. 18 ft drop, and it was scary at first but awesome!
Hope everyone’s ready for a great paddling season and SYOTR!!!!

Can you please describe the approach, the lift off, the descent and what happened on the landing. Real curious to know, since I am way to chicken to attempt it myself, just being a Voyeur…
Congratulations on all of the above!

OK, let’s see if I can remember everything…
I’m still learning all the technical stuff as I have only been paddling for a year, but I will describe what happened the best I can remember.
Jeremy Laucks led me to the falls, and Stephen climbed onto the rock to take pictures. They didn’t let me scout the falls as they said I would chicken out, so Jeremy pointed to the spot where I needed to go, and told me to go up to the edge, take a stroke off the lip with my right paddle blade, and lean forward on the way down.
He went first, disappeared off the edge, and Stephen motioned for me to go. I shook my head at first and then just went for it!
I let the current take me up to the edge between the two curlers (my landmarks), tried to grab the lip of the falls with my right blade (I put the blade in a second sooner than I should have – I should have almost reached the blade out past the edge of the falls, and grabbed the rock, pushing me out and over) looked over the edge, said “Oh crap” and leaned forward. I went in on a pretty perfect angle, went completely under and emerged still upright. It all happened so fast, but it felt great!
Stephen got a series of shots, of me coming over the edge, halfway down, helmet submerged, and then resurfacing.
It was only scary at first, I didn’t have time to stay scared as I had to style it! I would do it again for sure.
Waterfalls like the one I ran are pretty consequence-free and easy. There are others where you can majorly screw up your lines or boof. I think it was hard to mess this one up.
I think you should get ready for your first fall, but do it with people who know what they’re doing. You’ll love it!!

Have the guys up there convinced you to do some time with the Keener program?
Most of the kids from around the area spend time with them in the summer, and junior Greats such as Joel Kowalski, Nick Troutman, Deuce Fahrun and Katie Kowalski spend their summer learning more and helping to coach.
Check out last summer:
