Washago Black: when does it normally start running, and for how long? How does it compare to the Gull?

It is generally a spring run river. Much easier than the gull and way more forgiving.

Anyone have a visual on the ice conditions of the Black, I’m guessing it’s still frozen solid. Also don’t forget about the Head River, a fun creeky spring run with a coffee shop halfway through the run. Gary where are you located?, I’m 25 minutes from the Black so let me know if you want to meet up sometime.

Went by the put in thi morning – still iced in, but the ice is pretty rotten and there are open leads in many spots. Won’t be too much longer, but not this weekend.

Same story with the Head, but the lady at Tim Who’s promised to email me when the ice breaks up there.

hey Val, ya I’d be interested in going once it starts running. I’m on 48 closer to markham, about an hour away. Never run it before, but I had a look at it from the bridge a couple of times last summer when I was passing by. But wasn’t much going at that time. I’m guessing it compares more to a “middle Mad” when its up.

    I’m curious about the Head.

Where is the put-in and take-out?

What other river would you compare it to.

Any idea what the flow volume is when it’s at it’s best?

I have tripped on the Black thru that area. I’m about 40 minutes drive time from there near Head Lake.

The put in is on MacKenzie Rd off Hwy 45, just a couple Km East of Tim Who’s. The take out is on Lake Dalrymple Rd, a couple of Km West of Tim Who’s. Half way down the river it loops up to the highway and you can park your boat and get a coffee and fruit tart… truly wonderful.

To me it feels like a more “creeky” version of the Black – nothing very difficult, just narrower and slightly bigger drops.

It is best when the Black is washed out. My visual gauge is the rocks at the Hwy 169 bridge put in for the Black. If the rocks are under water then time for the Head.

Count me in for a first of the season running of the Black or the Head. Have a need to get wet and will be hitting the water as soon as the ice is off… Email me when you are ready to go.
