What is the buzz?

What company has the best all around play boat. Something you can play all day on the Ottawa with but still work your way down the Kipawa.

From this year’s canoes I like the Zephyr from Esquif and for kayaks a large Pyranha Burn has been keeping a grin on my face all summer.
Next year??? Who knows! I may not have room to store any more boats.
Where is the best place to try new boat models?

"PLAYBOATS" people! hahaha

so far it has been all talk about open boats and creekers! I don’t know anything marvelous really… It felt like a bit of a stale year for new boats. Lots of cool stuff from last year.

I’m still a big fan of my Astro 54, though it’s not new ‘this year’…

I tried the Astro 58 and didn’t like it as much… I was expecting just a bigger Astro 54, but it actually feels like the rails were designed differently… Also, I think it takes a lot of messing around with the seat to get it set up right if you’re not over 6′ tall…

I tried the Fluid Nemesis, and thought it was ‘interesting’… (Not necessarily in a good way, but I did like it better than the guy I borrowed it off, if that says anything…..)

I also had an opportunity to try a Bliss-Stick Specialist on Garb just recently… The outfitting totally didn’t fit me right, but the boat still felt great! The Specialist was particularly cool on a back-surf, where the Astro 54 feels a little ‘sloppy’.

I haven’t tried the Dagger Agent, but although it looks a lot like the Specialist, I’m getting the impression it’s a bit of a dud… Maybe too narrow, and the rails aren’t pronounced enough… Looks kinda slow for such a flat hull, too…

My top picks are the [b:3378qu3l]Astro 54[/b:3378qu3l] and [b:3378qu3l]Bliss-Stick Specialist[/b:3378qu3l]. A lot of people are raving about the [b:3378qu3l]2007 Jackson Stars[/b:3378qu3l], but I don’t know much about them… The [b:3378qu3l]Pyranha 4 Twenty[/b:3378qu3l] is also looking pretty cool…

Boats that so far look to be [b:3378qu3l]duds[/b:3378qu3l] (based what I’ve seen in the lineup at Garb and Bus Eater) are the [b:3378qu3l]Dagger Agent[/b:3378qu3l] and [b:3378qu3l]Fluid Nemesis[/b:3378qu3l].

Lots of people are paddling the [b:3378qu3l]Wavesport Projects and ZG’s[/b:3378qu3l], and they’re going big, but I don’t know much about Wavesport boats… I’ve been biased against Wavesport for years (because of how crappy the seating position used to be).

In terms of the [b:3378qu3l]Shaggy Designs[/b:3378qu3l] boats… There’s a kid at River Run who’se name I can’t remember who’s been throwing down pretty huge in the [b:3378qu3l]Saint[/b:3378qu3l]… If I had money (plus money to get Jamie Dors to do some serious outfitting), I might buy one… (They’re like, 25 pounds! Which is ridiculously cool! I’m thinking it’s gotta be the future of playboating…..)

Don’t rely on the line-ups, ½ those people are sponsored and the other ½ are friends of the pros who bought there last years boat. And if Billy has taught us anything this year is that you can’t always paddle the best boat, you have paddle the best deal.

Fluid Nemesis most under rated boat
Dagger Agent most universal cookie cutter boat
Liquid Logic Ronin most spud look alike boat
Jackson Star most likely to be the same as 2006/07/08/09 etc.
Pyranha 4-tenty most likely to get you high (off the water)
Riot Astro most likely to crack
I would trust the Saint more then the Riot

If you want I have a Wavesport X, and I heard that long boats are coming back.

I paddled a Riot Astro 54 all last season when it first appeared on the scene, probably the best Riot playboat since the Disco I absolutely love it, so I guess we agree on something.

However the only boat that I like better and feel out-performs 99% of the new stuff out there is the Dagger Agent. I paddle the 6.2 and to be totally honest, I like it better than my Vision 56(which is a big deal because it is a phenonenal design…Pat Camblin and co. still paddle it over the Ronin…so that says somehting right there.)

The Agent 6.2 is the only boat that I have paddled which runs and plays in a hole like an older school design(cartwheels, carves etc smoothly) and yet totally rips on bigger waves for aerial moves. I had it on garb and it went huge when I was on the ball…then I travelled down to pushbutton to carthweel until I was dizzy

There really are no ‘Duds’ out there at present, just certain designs that excel in specific disciplines. I have also heard really good things about the new Jackson All Star series from a source other than Billy Harris…so it is reliable

Cheers, Jeff

If people are thinking of OC1 and considering a Zephyr, consider getting them to cut the side wall down a bit (1") to make paddling a little easier. I believe this is an option now.

With both Jeff and Rob. The Astro is a great boat. On the other hand i refuse to try other makes and models, it only makes me want to change boats. Unfortunately the riot astros outfitting although comfortable and versatile it is week. I have spent a considerable amount of time re-outfitting and strengthening the seat. I believe that it is only made to last 1 season, forcing you to purchase a new boat. What I have done to make it better;

1. Beef up foam on the back band.

2. replaced seat mounting bars with stronger and wider aluminum.(after I bent them. My Buddy broke them)

3. Send a 3/4"aluminum tube down the centre of the seat to stiffen it and the hull, the seat is very week just in front of the back band ratchet, causing sever oil canning in the front part of the hull.

This has resulted in a stiffer more responsive hull giving it better bounce in aerial moves and snappier in edge transitions. It has also increased the speed on a wave. Tested it last weekend on garb and it’s like paddling a new boat.

The project has taken over the Ottawa though, i would say that 70% of the kayaks on the river are projects. Maybe their is truth in numbers.

Peace
